Video-assisted thoracic surgery at CentraState in NJ

Video-assisted thoracic surgery – or VATS – is one of the most important innovations for the treatment of minimally invasive lung cancer, and it’s here at CentraState. Two of our specially trained thoracic surgeons (experts on surgery in the chest cavity) were among the first in the world to develop and perform this procedure and have completed over 6,000 video-assisted thoracic surgeries.

What is video-assisted thoracic surgery?

VATS is a delicate surgery used for biopsies, or to perform surgery to remove tumors or, in some cases, the lobe of the lung affected by cancer. Our skilled surgeons at CentraState make very small incisions to insert a tiny video camera called a thoracoscope and surgical instruments to perform VATS. This technique is less invasive than traditional or "open" surgery, and enables patients who qualify for this surgery to have a shorter length of stay in the hospital and less post-operative pain.
